Results<\/a><\/p>\nThis year significantly more higher category players tried to enter the Italian Challenge Open, meaning that from category 14 (ranks 76\u2013121 in last season\u2019s HotelPlanner Tour rankings), only Czech player Ji\u0159\u00ed Zuska gained entry. A total of 32 players were left out. Five past and current season winners were in the field. Only three amateurs made it into the tournament in addition to Varjun, English players Harley Smith (WAGR 88) and Kris Kim (WAGR 615) also competed. Smith won the Portuguese Internacional Amateur Championship in spring, where Kim finished fifth and Varjun tied for 10th.<\/p>\n
The next Challenge de Catalunya will take place next week, 14\u201317 May, in Spain. The level of the field is expected to be even stronger than at the Italian Challenge Open, as there is no DP World Tour event the same week, meaning more DP World Tour players are expected to tee it up.<\/p>\n
Mattias Varjun\u2019s comments on the week: \u201cThis week I kept making my life unnecessarily difficult and at the same time failed to convert good opportunities. I had to hit a lot of wedges and short irons, with which I struggled to control the ball. I also didn\u2019t make many putts because I failed to read the slopes on the greens correctly.
