The history of the event dates back to 1965. Three Estonian players took part: Kevin Christopher Jegers, Mattias Varjun (both Niitvälja Golfiklubi) and Hart Oskar Aoveer (Rae Golfiklubi).

The best score among Estonians was produced by Varjun, who returns from England with a strong finishing surge and a tied 6th place, finishing at +4 (69, 74, 70, 71). Jegers finished tied 15th with a score of +6 (74, 68, 73, 71), alongside last year’s winner Hugo Le Goff. Aoveer only completed two rounds (76, 81).

The battle for victory was mainly between two Nordic players over all three days Finland’s Lauri Rosendahl and Sweden’s Karl Erik Tjarnberg. Thanks to a strong second round (65), Rosendahl took the lead after round two. Although Tjarnberg briefly regained the lead on the final day after three birdies in quick succession near the closing holes, the win ultimately went to the Finn. Only these two players finished under par: Rosendahl at -4 and Tjarnberg at -2. Third place was shared by England’s Ben Bolton, who recently finished third at Sotogrande. European rankings leader Eliot Baker, winner at Sotogrande, missed the cut by one shot, while fourth-ranked Harley Smith made the final day but finished only 42nd.

Results

Varjun’s opening round started strongly (-2) and at one point he was even leading the tournament. The course, which has hosted The Open 11 times (most recently in 2012, next in 2028), proved challenging for many players, reflected in the scores, but his opening 69 left him just two shots off the lead. Friday’s round, played in better weather conditions but with more difficult pin positions, resulted in a 74. A highlight of the day was an eagle on hole 17 from 187 metres. The final day included two rounds. In the morning round, Varjun carded a solid level par 70, but a bogey-heavy start in the final round led to a score of +5 at one point, causing a drop down the leaderboard. However, he recovered strongly with the second eagle of the tournament (this time from a bunker and making him the only player with two eagles in the event) and two birdies, finishing the final round with 71 and climbing back into the top ten overall.

Jegers’ best round came on day two, when a bogey-free 68, helped by two birdies, stood out. Each of his rounds included at least one double bogey, leading to small over-par totals each day. Aoveer’s opening round was solid, especially the front nine, but a difficult spell in the second round significantly affected his final result.

All three players competed in the event for the first time, although Varjun and Jegers had played at the same venue in 2022 when it hosted The Amateur Championship. Varjun’s and Jegers’ finishes are among the best ever by Estonian golfers at the Lytham Trophy. In 2024, the only previous Estonian participant, Richard Teder, finished tied 31st at +11. The Estonian players noted after the rounds that the event was mentally very demanding, with wind, rain, and difficult putting conditions making it exhausting. Still, both Varjun and Jegers were satisfied with their overall performance.

The tournament has been played since 1965 at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club. The venue has hosted The Open Championship 11 times, most recently in 2012 when Ernie Els won his second Open title with a score of -7. Other winners here include Tony Jacklin, Gary Player, Tom Lehman, David Duval, and twice Seve Ballesteros. The Women’s British Open has also been played here five times, most recently in 2018 when Georgia Hall won, and in 2003 when Annika Sörenstam claimed victory. The Amateur Championship has been hosted here five times, most recently in 2022. Four Estonians played that year, with the best result from Mattias Varjun, who finished tied 33rd. In stroke play, he was tied 10th, just one shot behind Ludvig Åberg, who went on to reach the quarterfinals.

This weekend the traditional Lytham Trophy tournament was played at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club.
