At the Spanish International Amateur Championship held in Madrid (111th Copa S.M. El Rey), played at Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro, members of the Estonian national team Mattias Varjun and Richard Teder were also in competition.<\/p>\n

The tournament began with a two day stroke play qualification round, after which the top 64 players advanced to match play. Both Estonians successfully made it through stroke play qualification (Teder +3 and Varjun +4) and continued in match play. Stroke play results<\/a> <\/p>\n

In the first round, Varjun defeated Italy\u2019s Giovanni Daniele Binaghi 3&2 and advanced to the next round. Teder\u2019s tournament ended in the opening round, where he lost to the Netherlands\u2019 Stijn Egging 3&1.<\/p>\n

In the next round, Varjun continued with a solid performance, defeating Denmark\u2019s Magnus Becker Frederiksen 4&2. However, in the round of 16 he had to concede defeat to England\u2019s Tom Osborne 3&2, ending his tournament in the last 16 and finishing tied 9th.<\/p>\n

Osborne (WAGR 220) then went on a strong run and reached the final, where he defeated fellow Englishman Eliot Baker (WAGR 60) 3&2 to secure the title at this championship, which has been played since 1911. In the final, Baker led for most of the first 18 holes, but Osborne took the lead on the 21st hole and never relinquished it again.<\/p>\n

Mattias Varjun\u2019s comments: \u201cIt\u2019s been a while since I played on a course where the ball rolled so much. The hard, sloping and fast greens made the conditions very difficult. At times, it was better to just chip the ball onto the green somewhere rather than risk missing the correct spot. The tough conditions meant that every mistake was heavily punished, and even a good shot did not guarantee a good result.During the stroke play rounds my game wasn\u2019t at its sharpest, but I managed to limit mistakes and post two solid scores. In the first two days there weren\u2019t many birdie opportunities, so it was important to keep bogeys to a minimum. On some holes, even making a bogey was acceptable, because a much bigger number was always possible. As the week went on, my game improved and my best rounds came during match play. The ball was more under control and I was able to secure two strong wins.
