We recieved a written confirmation today from The European Golf Association (EGA) saying that Estonia has been given the opportunity to organize the European Golf Championships in the next two years. In 2021, the men and U18 young men B-division team championships will be held at the Estonian Golf & Country Club (EGCC) in Jõelähtme. And a year later, The European Senior Mens Team Championships will be held on the same field. The men B-division team championship, which will be next year, has been held in Estonia once before. Competition was held in Niitvälja in 2007 and Estonian team won the competition, individually the best was Mark Suursalu, who is now the head coach.

EGCC has previously hosted four European Championships. In 2012, the Mid-Amateur Championship, a year later the Senior Champonship, the 2014 Womens and in 2016 the Mens Individual European Championships. Celebrating their 15th birthday this year, EGCC has hosted the World Cup European Qualifier in 2009 and 2011, in addition to top amateur competitions.

According to Erki Möldri, President of the Estonian Golf Association, getting the competitions to be held in Estonia is first and foremost a recognition of Estonian golf. “The competition for organizing competitions is great, which is why the decision of the EGA must be taken in as a recognition of Estonian golf and previous organizers. For two years in a row, our best players of the respective age group have the opportunity to compete with the best of Europe on their home course. I hope that with the support of home course and people we will be able to show good sports results, “added Mölder.

Hanno Kross, Chairman of the Board of Estonian Golf & Country Club, considers it very important for Estonia to trust top golf competitions, which confirms the ambitions and capabilities of our small country in an area that has been played in the world for 650 years, but only 25 years in Estonia. “The organization of the European Championships on Jõelähtme golf courses is a logical continuation of our goal ten years ago to periodically offer the Estonian local audience world-class golf and also to introduce Estonia as a tourist destination for golfers around the world,” said Kross.
