At the R&A Boys Amateur Championship in Scotland, the players advancing to the last 16 were decided on Thursday morning. Estonia’s only representative, Hart Oskar Aoveer, faced France’s Simon Lignereux. Unfortunately, Aoveer had to concede a narrow one-hole defeat. Results

The match got off to a good start for Hart, as he immediately took the lead on the opening hole. However, his opponent soon took control and led for most of the match. Aoveer regained the lead only after the 15th hole. The next hole was halved, and everything seemed to be going his way, but unfortunately he lost each of the final two holes, handing the match to the Frenchman.

Aoveer therefore finished tied for 17th overall. The only better result by an Estonian at the event came from Kevin Christopher Jegers, who shared ninth place in 2019, advancing one round further before losing to the eventual champion.

This year’s title went to Iceland’s Oliver Eli Bjornsson, who defeated Sweden’s Ludwig Libera on the 37th hole — the first extra hole — in the final. Results

Hart Oskar Aoveer: “The tournament was very well organised and the course was in good condition. It wasn’t the longest course, but the narrow fairways and some of the smaller greens made it challenging. The weather was very good throughout the tournament, with little wind and no rain. I was very happy with my game, both in stroke play and match play. My putting was very good in the first match and helped me secure the win. The second match was very close. I had to fight back to level the match several times, but mistakes on the final holes gave my opponent the opportunity to win. Overall, I was happy with the tournament and I achieved my goals.”

Personal coach Daniel Moss Silva, who accompanied Aoveer: “The tournament was held at the historic Gailes Links, one of the world’s oldest golf courses, established in 1787. Pleasantly warm and calm conditions prevailed throughout the week. Team Estonia Golf player Hart Oskar was the only Estonian to qualify for this prestigious U18 event, which brought together top juniors from around the world. Links golf requires a wide variety of shots and skills, and Hart Oskar adapted well to the conditions from the very beginning of the week. In the stroke-play qualifying rounds, Oskar produced a number of high-quality shots and showed impressive length off the tee, creating good opportunities to score. At the same time, he remained calm and composed throughout, even when the cut line was close. With rounds of 73 and 71, he qualified for the 64-player match-play stage. In the first round, Hart Oskar faced Italy international David Maltese. From the very start of the match, Hart Oskar showed high-quality golf, making good use of his length and solid technique. He took an early lead and kept his opponent under pressure throughout, winning the match 2&1. In the second round, his opponent was France international Simon Lignereux, an experienced junior who started strongly and took an early lead. Hart Oskar remained calm and composed, however, and continued to put pressure on his opponent, turning the match in his favour on the 15th hole. Hart Oskar was 1UP with two holes to play, but a few decisions influenced by his lack of experience gave Simon an opportunity to turn the match around. Overall, it was a very strong performance from Oskar throughout the week. He will take valuable experience and lessons from this tournament, using them as a foundation to keep working hard and continue his journey towards becoming the best player he can be.”
